The Petal Garden turns a suburban backyard into a recreational landscape of linked outdoor rooms. The design creates an “anti-lawn,” by rethinking the backyard around specific activities rather than an undefined grassy domain. In place of a generic yard, a personalized outdoor space built around a family’s life.

Low-consumption mow-able native groundcovers replace typical resource-intensive grasses. Stone pathways link the “lobes” of greenspace while passing along a pea stone fire pit, up boulder embankments, and through perennial gravel garden plantings.

The Petal Garden is a model of outdoor space we continue to explore in many forms.
