Two tall, abstract metal sculptures with zigzag shapes and yellow accents made from bike racks, set against a plain gray background with a bike.

A Perfect Jump

USE: Urban Infrastructure

LOCATION: Worcester, MA

DATE COMPLETED: Ongoing

These bicycle racks are designed as a tribute to Marshall “Major” Taylor, the fastest man alive at the turn of the 20th Century. As a piece of useful street furniture, the project draws a connection between Taylor, the first African American international sports superstar, and residents using bikes for daily transportation.

The bent tubular forms invoke the dynamics of cycling and the graphic pattern recalls the uniforms of Taylor himself. The design is an expression of Taylor’s approach to a good race: the importance of a clean line, the ability to weave out of a pocket, and a perfect jump for the finish.

A Perfect Jump is a collaboration with artists Laura Marotta and Seth Hoffman.
